Integrity, Respect, Passion - these are the cornerstones of our Operating Philosophy and represent our commitment to you. At First National Bank, we strive to better serve you and your banking needs - and we are as hopeful and excited about the future of our bank as our founders were.

Take a look through time at the history of First National Bank.

History

Established in 1856 by the Castle family, the Castle Bank heritage makes us one of Illinois' most historic financial institutions. In fact, a member of the Castle family has served on the board of directors since the bank was founded. Our long-standing reputation for service quality has served the bank and our customers well for over 160 years.

Along the way, our holding company, Sandwich Banco, Inc., acquired First National Bank in DeKalb in 1984, itself a storied Illinois banking institution that was founded in 1859 and became a national bank in 1882. In the early 90s, First State Bank of Harvard joined our family of banks, along with The Bank of Yorkville, and by the end of the decade, all of our banks merged under one name, Castle Bank.

In 2002, Castle Bank became part of First National of Nebraska. Five years later, First National Bank of Marengo was acquired by First National of Nebraska and its locations became branches of Castle Bank.

In 2010, Castle Bank became a division of First National Bank of Omaha, a subsidiary of First National of Nebraska. Much like Castle Bank, First National Bank of Omaha’s roots date back to 1857 and it is in its sixth generation of family ownership. In addition to sharing a rich history, our banks also share the philosophy of putting our customers first and building strong communities.

As you can see, many of our customers have already known us as their “First” bank and may yet consider us just that. So, changing our name to First National Bank should seem perfectly natural for many of you. The decision to consolidate our banks over the years made us a stronger and more diversified banking company – leveraging our combined strength to serve our customers and communities. Our common history and culture has led to a successful blend of sophisticated products and personalized service from the local management teams and employees that first served you and continue to serve you today.

Becoming First National Bank is merely the next chapter in a long tradition of banking excellence that, next year, will mark its 160th anniversary. We are proud to serve you as the bank that continues to put you first: First National Bank.
